Now THIS Is a Cartoon! (2007-10-04)

Now THIS was a cartoon. I loved Iron Giant. I didn’t think I would, since men my age don’t usually sneak into cartoons anymore, but this was delightful. The animation was reminiscent of my childhood, with the style and colors and flare. It is the story of a robot from outer space and the earth boy who befriends him. The story was well written and the entire movie experience was a joy. I was shopping with Bunny on a Saturday afternoon when my little adventure began. I noticed the movie was playing next door, but Bunny was very firm with her decision to take me shopping for the day. While she was trying on girdles at Clara Jane’s Clothiers, I made my move. I slipped past Doris Conklin and Penny Doogle who were chatting in ladies undergarments and then popped out the back door while Clara Jane’s husband was taking out the trash. The movie-house back exit opens into the alley next to the clothing store and as the children poured out from the first film, I slipped in. I climbed up to the balcony and paid Donnie Boswell 2 dollars to go downstairs and buy me a ticket and some Cracker Jacks. Then I sat back and enjoyed the movie. I felt 10 years old again, and it was well worth the tongue-lashing I received from Bunny later. Take the kids or the folks. This old fashioned cartoon will bring a smile to your face and if you are lucky, could save you from a girdle fitting. Rooster.

A New Style (2007-10-04)

It is nice to see an animated movie succeed that is NOT blatent copy of Disney's style. Dreamworks "Prince of Egypt" and "Anastasia" were both good animated movies, but they copied the Disney formula so closely that the children I spoke to thought they were made by Disney. The Iron Giant is much more original. Granted, it's originality comes from adopting the animation style of the older cartoons, but it is done so well that you can't help loving the movie. The story is common enough. A boy befriends a creature that looks scary and ugly on the outside, but is really a big sweetheart. The government and army guys want to blow him up and the boy must save him. There is nothing really new here, but the way the story is unfolded and way the characters, including the Giant, are portrayed is very touching. This is the first time I have seen adults with tears in their eyes (not me of course) at an animated movie. Go and see the Iron Giant to encourage Warner Brother's to make more good, original animated movies. WB's "Quest for Camelot" and "The King and I" were poor attempts at the Disney formula and were neither good nor original. Let's hope that the Iron Giant is the start of a string of Roosters!
