What Happened to Happy Endings? (2007-10-04)

Valentine's Day in Doyle Bluffs is always an adventure. It's hard to be romantic in a town that only has one flower shop and more then a dozen bait shops. It's fun to go down to the drug store and watch all the old buzzards shop for greeting cards to give their wives. This is not a pretty site. They groan and moan and finally pick a card that seems to say the right things. But they all know that their wives will only give the card a quick glance and then look around for the box of valentine chocolate that BETTER be forthcoming. A good valentine card should be romantic, funny, sentimental and most of all, mushy. This is the one day of the year that you are allowed to gush. A good valentine movie should be the same, and Message in a Bottle came darn close. It is a warm romantic film starring Kevin Costner and Robin Wright Penn as would-be lovers in a world that is far from perfect. Finding a message in bottle, our heroine begins her quest to track down the man who wrote such wonderful letters to his deceased wife. The movie is full of romantic themes and even delights us with a sentimental performance by Paul Newman as Costner's father. The movie is about love and how it can torture you or renew you depending on the situation. All the actors give spirited performances and it was good to see Costner back in the type of role that he excels in. The problem with this film, however, is that it is not a valentine. It is a sympathy card mixed in with the valentines, and don't be fooled by the 'feel good' advertising. This is a tearjerker drama with a truckload of reality thrown in. Good acting and an interesting story, but don't look for the box of chocolates at the end. Cow.
