You Will Love Tarzan (2007-10-04)

As a kid, I read nearly every one of Edgar Rice Burroughs books, including the 24 that featured Tarzan. As soon as I finished one, I'd head back to the Doyle Bluffs Central Library and get another one. The ones I couldn't get from the library I'd buy on trips to Des Moines. ERB's books are great for adolesent boys. They are filled with adventure, romance, honor, and suspense. Those are hard to come by in a town the size of Doyle Bluffs without a vivid imagination and a little help from a good book or movie. I have been waiting and waiting for someone to do a screen adaptation that is true to the Tarzan books, but it hasn't happened yet. Given the film industries' record, I didn't really expect Disney to be any more true to the story. As a result, I wasn't suprised that Disney's animated Tarzan was no more true to the ERB book, than Pocahantas was to the real live story of that Native American Princess. But it didn't matter. Tarzan was a great animated movie. It worked for adults as well as for children. I really liked the Tarzan character that Disney created and the way he interacted with Kala, his adopted ape mother and with Jane, the girl he meets. This Jane acted more like Jane Goodall than the Jane Porter of ERB's Tarzan book, but the character worked well in a Disney animated movie. My only real criticism of the movie was that the bad guy just wasn't very interesting. They had to have a bad guy, so Disney dredged up the same villian they used in Pocahantas. Violent European dispoiling the Native Environement for money. Yawn. The Sid and Scud in Toy Story or the Priest in Hunchback, now THOSE were bad guys! The real story is how Tarzan grows up and then meets Jane and discovers his humanity so it really didn't matter. The bad guy was just a distraction to add a little pathos. If you like Disney animated movies, you'll love Tarzan. It is one of the better ones. I can't do the Tarzan yell, but I can crow like a Rooster. Cockadodle-doo!

Another Disney Gem (2007-10-04)

When I was a boy, I spent many hours reading the Tarzan books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I collected Tarzan comic books, and watched all the Tarzan movies. I was a little worried that Disney would ruin all my fond memories of the books, but I should have known better. Bunny and I took our granddaughter to the film and it was great. The songs by Phil Collins were super and the animation was fun and fast paced. I didn't care for the elephant character, but all the rest were super. I especially enjoyed the charter voiced by Rosie O'Donnell. Minnie Driver was also wonderful as the voice of Jane. The story strayed from the original books, but much less than many of the movies. It was fun and entertaining. Another Disney gem. Rooster

A Rooster! One of Those Movies. (2009-05-08)

Tarzan is a classic that I can watch over & over like Lion King, Aladdin, Wall-E, etc. It has some awesome songs by Phil Collins too boot! (More)

A Rooster! Animated Tarzan A Pleasant Surprise (2009-05-08)

I found this surprisingly good because not only was animation well done - which they all seem to be in the past decade - but an involving, action-packed story that was interesting start-to-finish. The... (More)

A Rooster! Great Classic Disney Animated Film (2009-04-07)

The animation in Tarzan is a joy to watch from start to finish; the music a treat. My 3-year old grandson LOVES his "newest" movie! (More)
