Pass the Snickerdoodles (2007-10-04)

grew up with Walt Disney. My kids and grandkids have grown up with Disney movies as well. We've come a long way from Bambi to Mulan but the quality and family oriented storytelling is second to none. It was a good movie. I took my cousin Elmo and his four daughters to the show. Elmo lives down in Normanville Corners with his wife Doreen. They come up every July for the Obediah Days Festival. Elmo grew up in Doyle Bluffs and has been the Mincemeat Pie Baking Champion since 1972. Every year we have 3 days of wild, Iowa festivities. Cow chip tossing, Pig calling, Corn husk whittling, worm racing, and pie baking. Umm, umm, good. That mincemeat pie of Elmo's is legendary. Last year I asked Elmo his secret. He called me down to Cameron creek and spoke in a hushed tone. "The secret is.......consistency. Every year I use the exact same recipe. Same number of eggs. Same number of spices. Same mince. Same meat. The key is that it is ALWAYS good. The judges expect it to be good. They know it was good two years ago, and five years ago and 15 years ago. I always win, because nobody has come up with a better recipe." Mulan would make a good Mincemeat pie. Best cartoon in its class. Same recipe as last year and the year before. Good characters, good songs, good story. Same standard. Same format. Nobody has come up with a better recipe. The interesting fact is that my wife Bunny's Snickerdoodles, Gretchen Finnigan's Brownies, Nan Tucket's Raspberry Pudding and Jesse Cartright's Cream Puffs all beat Elmo's Mincemeat pie this year for best overall dessert. Mulan is good, but not overall great. Eddie Murphy shined in his part and did a wonderful job. The story was a bit slow and the characters were predictable. The moral of this festival fable is that consistency may win you ribbons, but consistency alone does not win any roosters in Doyle Bluffs. Mulan is a cow, so pass the Snickerdoodles.

Don't Listen to Ira on This One (2007-10-04)

Now Ira says he grew up on Walt Disney, but we all know that Ira was pretty grown up before Disney came on the scene. I remember as a kid when Ira would pick my sister Bunny up from the house to take her to the latest Disney movie before they were married. I can't say that I disagree with all of Ira's criticism of Mulan. It was not Disney's best animated movie (Hunchback and Little Mermaid are my favorites), but it was a lot of fun. Mulan is the story of a traditional Chinese girl who throws convention to the winds and joins the army to save her father and defend her country. She is a girl of the 90's, but not too modern not to notice the handsome captain. Mulan reminded me of a girl I met in Singapore when I was on leave during the Vietnam war. Her name was Mary Wee and her British-Singlish accent was as cute as she was. We had some great times during those few days of leave and I always wonder about her. Perhaps it is that recollection that makes me give Mulan a Rooster.

A Rooster! Mulan From Disney (2009-06-03)

Mulan is a great movie for young and old. It incorporates some cultural sensitivity about ancient China with humor. I enjoyed watching this video with a group of 12 year olds. It was a... (More)
