A Rooster!

Rocket-rooster! (2007-10-02)

For the past few weeks my friend Gomer has raved about the new movie October Sky. He talks about down it at the Feed and Seed. He chats about it at the bait shops and bent the ear of every gal at last Saturday's Spring Fling Dance at the community center. Bunny and I had heard enough of the old coot and decided to go down to Clarinda and see it ourselves. Well let me tell you folks, it's wonderful. It's the true story of Homer Hickam and his dreams of a better life. Gomer gives a pretty good overview of the film (at least as good as a guy who talks to worms can), so I won't waste your time hitting on the details again. I would like to say that the movie is delightful and brought back many memories of the late fifties. Set in 1957-58 in the small Coal miner town of Coalwood West Virginia, the movie shows the power of never giving up on yourself or your dreams. The 'Rocket Boys' in this story teach us all that we don't have to settle for one road ahead. Our dreams can be a road map to anywhere. Gomer, as I'm surprised he didn't mention, had a wonderful science-fair project when he was in school as well. He won first prize in the county for his design of an electronic pencil. It was quite a site to see. Thinking about him plugging that puppy in still gives me a giggle. The old boy never looked back and his project took him to Phoenix for the nationals. Maybe he touched the future. Let's here it for my friend the dreamer. Yahoo Gomer!!! October Sky is a champion. Don't miss this film. Rocket-Rooster!!!!

A Rooster!

Highly Recommended (2007-10-02)

October Sky is a biography of four boys from a small coal mining town in West Virginia who overcome the many of the obsticles of life in a small town with limited opportunities. Inspired by the launch of the Russian space program and the American fever to surpass the Russians, the boys learn to build their own rockets and use it as a springboard to build their own lives. The beauty of October Sky is that it shows the human spirit at its greatest. It is a wonderful thing to achieve a goal and it is still greater to do it in the face of adversity, but the greatest achievement is to reach a goal that is outside the expectations of those around you. It was wonderful to see a character who did not go on to become the President of the United States or the Queen of Country Music. You could believe this story and you could believe in the characters. I highly recommend that you take your children to October Sky. If you live a life of privilege, it will be healthy to see what some people overcome to live the lives we take for granted. If you live a difficult life, you will see that focusing on your dreams pays off in the end. It was a fun movie, a good lesson, and a happy ending. October Sky is a Rooster!
