A Tragedy to Make Shakespeare Proud (2007-12-26)
Movies have a power to make you feel a certain way. They can make you laughing happy, crying sad, excited, thoughtful, frightened, pensive, thrilled or if they are bad enough, crabby. Most movies give you more than one feeling by the end.
I like having some of these feelings and don't like others. If the movie produces one of the feelings I don't like for too long, I generally don't like the movie much. Atonement made me laugh a few times (I'm not sure if that was intended) and was a little exciting for a flicker of a moment, but predominately, it was gut wrenchingly, painfully, vein openingly, sad.
That said, it was a very well made movie with a great cast, great direction and cinematography and superb acting. It was even a pretty well made story with some original elements, even if the pace was a little slow at times.
There are movies that end sadly, but don't leave you feeling depressed for the rest of the evening. "The English Patient" is an example that comes to mind. My recommendation for "Atonement" is to rent it and watch it at home. After it's over, fix yourself a sweet drink, and pop in your copy of "Groundhog Day". Your mood will swing right back to center and you'll be able to face the world again.

James McAvoy gave the best performance in Atonement. I didn't think I would think that but he was terrific. I would give him an Oscar nomination for sure. Redgrave's eyes at the end tell all.... (More)
