Oink-man (2007-10-02)

Now here is a mystery. How exactly do movies get critics to say wonderful things about them? Gomer and I had seen the previews to Mystery Men and the reviews in the paper were outstanding. Best of this, and funnier than that, and a must see by all. We excitedly gathered up some friends and headed out to see it the first day it opened. (Once again, some of these paid-off critics saw it early.) What a disaster. Was the movie funny? No. Was there more than an occasional laugh? No again. Was the serious thriller The General’s Daughter much funnier overall. Absolutely. Mystery Men was bad. This film about a rag-tag group of superhero wannabes is sad. The critics were paid off or were treated to some moonshine before the film started. The pace was dreadful and the jokes bland. We did not find it clever or entertaining and left with the feeling that this PIG should be allowed to eat the slop that the other critics posted with their glowing reviews. Don’t give it a second thought. Let this movie remain a mystery to both men and women alike. I’ll give them a new character for the sequel. Oink-man.

A Giant Bore (2007-10-02)

It is often very funny to make fun of silly things that are taken too seriously. Super-heros are somewhat easy targets in that regard. They are self-appointed protectors of this and that wearing funny costumes and fighting strange villians who also wear costumes. Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Wonderwoman, and the rest all serious dudes (and gals) wearing their underwear on the outside. This provides a marvelous opportunity for a movie spoofing superheros. Like Blazing Saddles was for The Western, Space Balls was for Star Wars and Monty Python was for most of Western Civilization, so Mystery Men could have been for all of the movies about Super Heros. But it wasn't. It was a giant bore. A huge yawn. A mighty snore. There were a few laughs and a few bright moments, but they could not salvage an otherwise dull show. I didn't find anything particularly mysterious about these men. It was a pig.

A Rooster! The Funniest Superhero Movie Ever (2009-08-11)

This film sits firmly near the top of my list of all-time favorites. It is unquestionably the funniest superhero movie ever made with silly but strong characters and a fantastic ensemble cast. The... (More)

A Rooster! Mystery Men (2009-07-18)

I have always loved this movie and think it's under-rated to say the least. At this price, I don't think anyone can go wrong ordering it even if they haven't seen it. The basic story is 4 (which... (More)

A Rooster! Top Ten Best Parodies Ever (2009-05-19)

Mystery Men offers one of my all time favorite movie quotes as the Shoveller says "We've go a blind date with destiny...and it looks like she's ordered lobster." Great script. Terrific... (More)
