My Kind of Film (2007-10-02)
Gomer stood there, looking at the catcher and waiting for the right sign. I signaled the catcher from where I sat in the dugout and called for the “high heat” or the “flaming Gomer” as Bunny called it. It was the ninth inning of the Tri-County Co-op finals and the Doyle Bluffs Badgers were leading by 1 run with two outs. Gomer was pitching a great game and by the time his “flamer” hit the catcher’s mit, our home team had won the championship and Gomer was the hero. A two-hitter with 11 strikeouts. A great day for Doyle Bluffs and for Gomer. The year was 1963 and Gomer was 16 years old. As he walked off the mound that day I saw him put a hand-full of dirt from the pitcher’s mound in his pocket. “Magic dust” he called it. For love of the game is what I remember.
I’m not a 30 year-old summer baseball coach anymore, but I still love the game. Bunny and I went to see the new Kevin Costner film For Love of the Game today, and it was wonderful. This love-story which is played in a pitcher’s mind during the course of a game is mushy, sentimental and cheesy. It pulls at our collective heartstrings and is extremely predictable. But, it is a fitting third star to Costner’s trilogy of baseball films. Costner is completely at home on the field and carries the baseball glory forward from Field of Dreams and Bull Durham.
Kelly Preston is super as his love interest and the players were very credible in their scenes. I really enjoyed this movie and give it a Rooster. We can’t be young again and may not have time to play or coach anymore but For Love of the Game gives us a bit of “Magic dust” to carry home from the theatre.

Costner has made about 5 or 6 good movies, and three of them are about baseball. Bull Durham is the comedy, Field of Dreams is the spiritual, but For Love of the Game is the more realistic of the... (More)
