Shed a Tear Or Two (2007-10-04)
Being a step-parent cannot be easy. It's like being a Rose entered in the Tulip category of the county fair. You may smell great, look great, have great color, but the judges are looking for tulips not roses. And though you may want to be a great tulip, you are still a rose, and like it or not, you may even poke the judges with a thorn or two. In the new movie StepMom, with Julia Roberts in the title role, the judges are the children. This well acted film has a great cast including Ed Harris and Susan Sarandon as his ex-wife. The story centers around the complex web of relationships caused by divorce. Roberts plays the new step-mother in the film and how she struggles to form a bond with children, and how they fight her at every turn. Sarandon is excellent as the mother who wants the best for her children, but at the same time does not want an intruder to get the attention of her kids.
The movie is touching and has some fun moments, but it is much too sappy for my liking. The writers added an extra dose of tragedy to the story, which it didn't need and our young judges, the children, often reacted to the thorn pricks by ripping off the pedals of our rose. If you plan to go, be ready to shed a tear or two.
