A Solid Cow (2007-10-04)
An Ideal Husband is full of people that I really enjoy watching perform. Cate Blanchet (Elizabeth), Minnie Driver, and Rupert Everett were already among my favorites. I'll now add Julianne Moore and Jeremy Northam to that list. They each did a great job in the movie. Julianne Moore in particular was great as a very controlled and wicked lady.
The movie answers the question "What is ideal in a husband?" It could also have been called the Tale of Two Husbands. The first (Everett) is a reluctantly prospective husband and the second (Northam) is, on the surface, an ideal husband. By the end of the movie we find that the ideal husband is one with a few flaws. Perfection is, in fact, dull. It is our minor flaws that make us interesting and appealing.
Despite the great cast and equally good performances, an Ideal Husband did not quite make Rooster status. To be a Rooster, you should be able to substitute the clever Everett and my darlings Cate and Minnie with lesser mortals and still enjoy the movie because it was so filled with funny lines and great story. When the performances are Roosters and the story is a Cow, the movie is a Cow (you can quote me on that).
I didn't regret the money I paid to see an Ideal Husband, but it would have made a fine rental at Christmas time too. It's a solid cow.

An Ideal Movie (2009-08-12)

Much funnier than "The Importance of Being Earnest". Great cast. Fantastic plot twists and writing. I pull it out about once a year and laugh each time. (More)

Lovely and Flawed (2009-07-30)

Others have reviewed this film accurately stating a lot which was well said.
Vaguely inspired by Wilde -some quotations feel contrived indeed- this is a good film as long as you disregard... (More)
