I Left Feeling Satisfied (2007-10-04)
It is now a tradition that Bunny (Ira's wife and my sister) and I take our mother to a movie on Mother's Day. She was a little under the weather on the holiday this year so we didn't get out until yesterday. Her choice was Tea with Mussolini the new movie staring veterans Cher, Judi Dench, Lily Tomlin, Joan Plowright, and Maggie Smith - all superb actresses. "Tea" is set just before and then during WWII in Italy. It is the story of the lives of three "mature" English women and two American women and an Italian boy they undertake to raise in this turbulent time.
The average age of the other movie-goers in the theater was just north of 70. My mother said that was a sure sign the movie was good, but I was a bit worried. Luckily, my concern was short-lived. Tea with Mussolini was well acted and well directed. The story was reasonably good and it moved along for the most part. I left the theater feeling satisfied, but not sure whether I had just seen a Cow or a Rooster.
My mother set me straight. Let me start by saying that Emelda Hinkle is not a woman to be trifled with. At 81, she still regulary drives a tractor around her small farm outside of Doyle Bluffs. When I told her that I was unsure of how to rate "Tea" she told me in no uncertain terms that "it was a ROOSTER and you'll call it a ROOSTER or I'll take you out to the woodshed!" Mom still chops her own wood, so this is no idle threat.
Ladies and Gentlemen, "Tea with Mussolini" is a Rooster. If you haven't done so already, I suggest you take your mother to see it.

Warning, Very Offensive Language (2009-06-12)
|
I, for one, don't understand why Hollywood insists on inserting truly foul language (it doesn't offend me if they leave it out, and it adds NOTHING to the story line if they put it in). I am sure... (More)

This is a movie for a rainy night at home (with tons of popcorn), it's nothing deep, just an amusing period piece. All great actors. (More)

This star cast movie is based on a true story. A very entertaining way to learn history. Suspenseful yet not a nail biter, very beautiful story. (More)
