Dark, But Very Well Done (2008-01-01)
Merry Christmas! Why would a person go see a movie like No Country for Old Men on Christmas day? Well, Bunny and I had to drive over to Des Moines to drop my college daughter off at the airport. She was flying to see her boyfriend for part of the holidays. Ugg. Don't get me started.
Anyway, while Bunny was in shopping, I took a couple of hours and went to see this new film. Dark is an understatement. Sad, brutal, and an ending that will leave a pit in your stomach. Normally, as Gomer will tell you, I don't dig this kind of film. But the Coen brothers have put together another masterpiece. The pacing is slow, but the acting is incredible. Kudos to Josh Brolin, whom is turning in a number of fine performances of late. (American Gangster)
This is not holiday fare, but is really a good show. Be sure to be in a good mood when you start, or you may want to go home and kick the dog.

No Country for Gomer (2007-12-11)
There are whole worlds out there that we don't see in the protected lives we lead. Worlds where life is not as precious as we see it here in Doyle Bluffs. "No Country for Old Men" is disturbing because while the villain is an improbable character, we see the improbably happen every day in the news. In fact, the very word improbably means "really does happen sometimes".
You will be riveted throughout this movie and even laugh a few times, but it will be the painful kind of laugh that occurs when your senses have been overwhelmed. This is not a splatter-fest of violence, but there is an undercurrent of just occurred violence and potential violence and sudden death from the beginning of the movie until the end. To say that this keeps your interest is an understatement.
I recommend that you watch this movie, but be prepared to leave just a little dissatisfied at the end. I believe this is forgivable because it is done for effect, but it is an effect that I don't really enjoy and I think the movie would be just as effective if it wrapped things up just a little more.
