Gross But FUN (2007-10-04)
When you are 12 years old, the balcony of a movie theatre seems great. When you are 64 the balcony becomes a punishment. Bunny and I were exiled to this pre-teen playground last week when we went to see There's Something About Mary, a new silly film starring Matt Dillon, Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller. We arrived late on Friday evening and to our dismay, found the main auditorium full. The MacDuff family was having their annual family reunion, and the whole bunch of them invaded the Paramount. Bunny, with her sore feet, and me with my bad knee hobbled up the 23 steps to the balcony. We made our way to our seats and sat between Delmer Flookspin who is going on eleven and Margie Clemmens, old Clem's granddaughter. Though it had been over 30 years since I last set foot up there, it did seem familiar. Actually, Bunny and I used to spend a good amount of time up there, and I'm sure I missed the entire plot of a movie or two. It did seem ironic that we ended up in the balcony for this particular movie. Spitballs in Bunny's hair, gum on the floor, a Hot Tamale in my ear and an unset bat hovering over us only seemed to make the movie funnier.
The comedy in this film was what my mother called Manure-humor. It was juvenile, silly and at times even gross, but it was funny. Somehow, it only made it better that Bunny and I were up in the peanut gallery instead of the main hall. It helped us feel young again and remember that we are never too old for some good laughs. Bunny even blew in my ear, which let me tell you, was a mite bit better than the sting of that Hot Tamale.
The plot was senseless and the film foolish, but the actors were very good and the overall movie experience was fun. So grab your gal and head up to the balcony. It may give you a new perspective, and if you are lucky, you may not even remember the plot. Rooster
